The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), together with a number of major partner organizations in the Climate Agenda and national and municipal agencies, is collaborating in a series of Showcase projects to demonstrate the application of climate information and weather forecasts to the reduction of human deaths related to extreme heat waves. The projects in Rome and Shanghai are described, focussing on the objectives, methodologies, and preliminary results. The paper also discusses the roles of the local partners in the operation of the systems, and plans for additonal Showcase projects.
