NOPP Drifter Project--Drifter Data in the K-12 Classroom

This project provides scientifically valuable data to K-12 educators and their students in a useful format while at the same time helping oceanographers to study ocean currents, transport of heat, sediment, larvae, and pollutants, as well as to provide ground-truthing of remotely sensed optical data. Data and data visualizations (i.e., drifter tracks) are posted on the web site (http://drifters.doe.gov) with associated SST. This information is provided along with activities for the K-12 classroom, links to other ocean drifter databases and drifter programs, as well as explanations about the research that is based on the drifter data. This project is sponsored through the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) and is supported by the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, the GLOBE Program, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Office of Naval Research and the US Geological Survey.
