Members of the American Meteorological Society spend a large percentage of their lives in the workplace. Within that environment, members face issues related to career development and advancement, interfacing with diverce workforce populations, and caring for dependents. The 1998 Membership survey provides a diagnosis of perspectives on these workplace issues. Results suggest that members are generally pleased with the state of their workplace. However, there are underlying concerns related to fair career development and hiring practices, dependent care, and the availability of "non-traditional" workplace programs (e.g., telecommuting, in-house daycare).
We explore the responses of the membership and attempt to place them into a useful perspective for the Society and its associated employers. Such considerations are timely as we enter a new millenium that will be characterized by diversity and innovation in the workplace.
