Ensure training and proficiency in the NWS

The National Weather Service (NWS) has developed Baseline Proficiency Standards for all operational positions in weather forecast offices, river forecast centers, central weather service units, and National Centers for Environmental Prediction service centers. All relevant training for these positions and duties have been outlined in the form of professional competency units. The training will be linked to the proficiency standards on a web page at the NWS Training Center.
Much of the training in the NWS is currently being accomplished by distance learning. This includes web-based training, teletraining, webcasts and hard copy materials. However, ensuring these training materials are utilized and meet the office's training deficiencies is the role of the local Science and Operations Officer (SOO). These training deficiencies are collected on a yearly basis and form the foundation for the next year's training plans.
Many NWS developed training materials are on the WWW and freely available for widespread university and public use. These materials are on the COMET METED web site "http://meted.ucar.edu". The NWS is striving to package these training materials into distance learning courses to improve the utilization of these materials.
