Precipitation Extremes: Prediction, Impacts, and Responses

P2.9

A Global Climatology of Thunderstorm, Hail, and Tornado Days

Aiguo Dai, NCAR, Boulder, CO

Three-hourly synoptic reports from over 15,000 weather stations and a large number of marine platforms for 1976-1997 were analyzed to create a global seasonal and annual climatology for each of the following extreme weather phenomena: thunderstorms, hailstorms, and squalls/funnel clouds/tornados. The regional and seasonal variations will be discussed. The mean diurnal cycle of these extreme events will also be analyzed.
