The "Celebrating 20th Century Pioneers in Atmospheric Sciences: Examining 21st Century Challenges and Opportunities" Workshop

The Center for the Study of Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Atmospheres and the Howard University Program in Atmospheric Sciences recently hosted a 2 ˝- day Student Conference entitled “Celebrating 20th Century Pioneers in Atmospheric Sciences, Examining 1st Century Challenges and Opportunities” during March 20-22, 2000 in Washington, DC. The purpose of this conference is:

To celebrate the achievements of atmospheric scientists from traditionally underrepresented groups (primarily Hispanic, Native Americans and African Americans) during the 20th Century, To encourage students to pursue graduate study and careers in atmospheric sciences and related fields, and To discuss issues that are particularly germane to traditionally underrepresented groups in these fields.

This conference had components that included:

(1) A historical perspective of traditionally underrepresented groups in the atmospheric sciences. (2) A plenary session devoted to several outstanding atmospheric scientists/meteorologists who served as pioneers or as current role models to be held at the National Academy of Sciences. (3) Panel sessions addressing important themes. (4) An afternoon session devoted to undergraduate and graduate students called “Free zone”. (5) A poster session with contributions from students and professionals. (6) A career fair with vendors from industry and professional schools for graduate students or professionals in the field of atmospheric sciences. (7) A banquet with a short awards ceremony.

This presentation will provide a summary of the workshop events and outcomes.
