P1.18 Revised U.S. Climate Change Indices

Tuesday, 16 January 2001
Byron E. Gleason, NOAA/NESDIS/NCDC, Asheville, NC; and D. R. Easterling

The U.S. Climate Extremes Index and Greenhouse Climate Response Index were revised and recalculated for the past 50 years (1950 to 1999). The U.S. Climate Extremes Index provides an annual measure of extreme temperature and moisture. The U.S. Greenhouse Climate Response Index provides an annual measure of changes in temperature, increases in cold season precipitation, drought duration, and heavy precipitation events. Preliminary results suggest that both indices have been increasing since 1970.
