Innovative partnering for ocean and atmospheric science outreach: Cruise ships, radio shows and more
Ellen J. Prager, Univ. of Miami/RSMAS, Miami, FL
The University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have joined forces with Royal Caribbean International in an unprecedented alliance to study the ocean and atmosphere, and to provide an exciting new platform for education. Royal Caribbean's new ship, Explorer of the Seas, has been equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and laboratories. In association with the research program aboard, an educational experience for the nearly 3800 passengers cruising each week has been created. Passengers look into the exciting and dynamic world they are traveling through, interacting with scientists onboard and having access to imagery and information about the ocean and atmosphere. Through two interactive exploration centers, laboratory tours, feature films, and special guest presentations each passenger in essence becomes an "explorer of the sea". An informative project website includes a virtual tour as well real-time streaming video and data. In another innovative collaboration, Royal Caribbean, the Rosenstiel School and Finger Lakes Production Inc have teamed up to produce a daily radio spot entitled, Our Ocean World. Our Ocean World is heard on over 200 stations nationwide and focuses on a diversity of ocean-science topics.
