Using Immersive Virtual Reality to Study Hurricane Cases

The two-dimensional (2D) plots are generally utilized for most meteorological variables while desktop 3D visualization and animation techniques provide a visual understanding of vertical structure for multi-layer, time-series datasets. The desktop 3D, however, lets us view a volume of data from outside the volume, and further more, loses the capability to closely examine small scale phenomena within dataset. A new visualization tool, MetVR which is based on the CAVE/RAVE, is used to analyze the processes of hurricane cases, hurricane Dennis and Floyd. One numerical weather forecast model, COAMPS, is employed to provide necessary products, including cloud, wind, potential temperature, precipitation and so on. This visual system allows user to "physically" navigate within and fly through dataset, and intuitively grasp the evolution of hurricane.
