10 Years of Daily Forecast Verification

Dan G. Bellue, NOAA/NWS, Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX

The NWS / Spaceflight Meteorology Group at the Johnson Space Center maintains forecast proficiency by issuing daily forecasts for shuttle landing sites in the Continental US, Spain, Morocco, and The Gambia. Specifically, these sites are: 1) the Shuttle Landing Facility, Florida, 2) Edwards AFB, California, 3) Northrup Strip, New Mexico, Zaragoza, Spain, Moron, Spain, Ben Guerir, Morocco, and Banjul, The Gambia. These forecasts are verified against the shuttle weather flight rule conditions at various times of the day depending on the landing time of the next shuttle mission. Some daily SMG forecast verification statistics have been maintained since 1988. These are periodically reviewed and used to help develop shuttle weather flight rules. Development of a standardized database using a Unix-based Workstation Forecast Editor (FE) has enhanced verification data collection efforts. The Forecast Editor software has been ported to AWIPS and is being used on these workstations presently. A standardized set of output statistics is generated for each forecaster and for the office as a whole on a yearly basis. This poster depicts the office statistics, illustrates the database format, and demonstrates the processes necessary to fully utilize all SMG forecast verification products in meeting customer demands for forecast accuracy statistics.
