The Areal Mean Basin Estimated Rainfall (AMBER) flash flood algorithm as an AWIPS local application.
Paul Jendrowski, NOAA/NWS, Honolulu, HI
The ambergis program is the latest software version of the Areal Mean Basin Estimated Rainfall (AMBER) flash flood algorithm previously developed by Robert Davis at the Pittsburgh Weather Forecast Office (WFO). The ambergis program can be run on AWIPS to produce real time AMBER output and the data can be displayed on D2D. The ambergis program is currently operational on AWIPS at 4 NWS WFOs with two more sites expected this summer. The Geographic Information System (GIS) program ArcView GIS is used to define small scale watersheds for AMBER and can also be used for real time display. This paper will describe the ambergis software package and how it is integrated into AWIPS. Use of the AMBER ArcView tools for basin delineation, customization and display will also be discussed.
