Evaluation of techniques to mitigate range and velocity ambiguities on the WSR-88D

Over the last few years Radar Operations Center sponsored the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the National Center for Atmospheric Research to develop methods for reducing the effects of velocity and range ambiguities that affect the WSR-88D. Two promising methods that have emerged are briefly discussed. These are the phase coding and staggered PRT. Plans are to incrementally test these methods and eventually incorporate the most advantageous combination into volume coverage patterns. An example of a suggested use in the volume coverage patter No. 11 is given and details of these ongoing tests are presented. They include collection and analysis of time series data that are generated from phase coded transmission and staggered transmission. In addition, use of an existing processor, and a newly developed processor is proposed to assess the quality of data. Some results obtained to date on pseudo staggered PRT data and progress on other tests will be reported.
