Impacts of fresh water diversions and concentrate discharge from a seawater desalination facility on water quality in Tampa Bay, Florida

Mark E. Luther, University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, FL

To provide potable water to the Tampa Bay area, a seawater desalination plant will be built on Tampa Bay and water will be withdrawn from the three major tributaries to the bay. A high resolution hydrodynamic model of the bay has been used in combination with long term water quality monitoring data to evaluate the cumulative and individual impacts of these water supply projects on the residual circulation and salinity fields in the bay.
