Educational use of the NCAR Integrated Sounding System

About ten years ago, NCAR's Atmospheric Technology Division and the NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory jointly developed the Integrated Sounding System (ISS) - a suite of instruments initially consisting of a boundary layer wind profiler, a balloon-borne sounding system, and a surface meteorological station. The ISS has since included a variety of additional instruments including lidars and sodars.
Intended primarily for short research deployments, the ISS has also been used in several projects where college and graduate level education have been an equal focus. These include projects in the Reno Basin and at the University of Michigan Biological Station. In addition, during primarily research use, the ISS has been a destination for class and community group visits.
This presentation will describe recent educational use of the ISS.
