IFPS Development and Implementation in the Pacific Region

Paul Jendrowski, NOAA/NWS, Honolulu, HI

The NWS Pacific Region brings a new set dimensions and requirements to IFPS. Forecasts in Pacific Region deal both with small islands with complex terrain spread out over large distances and very large offshore areas. The state of Hawaii contains 11 distinct climate zones many of which occur within a few miles of each other. For the Guam Weather Forecast Office, there is an additional requirement to provide automated forecast preparation capability over a geographic expanse of nearly 3000 miles, servicing five independent island or atoll states, all of varying terrain. Thus, IFPS will have to provide the capability throughout the Pacific Region to prepare high spatial resolution forecasts for specific islands and large domains to capture offshore areas. This presentation will discuss these special requirements needed in the IFPS system for use in Pacific Region, as well as training plans needed for its initial operational implementation.
