The CIRES Outreach Program: Involving Research Scientists in K–16 Education

Susan M. Buhr, CIRES/Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, CO

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) Outreach program provides effective opportunities for research scientists to contribute to K–16 education. CIRES scientists conduct outstanding interdisciplinary studies of the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and atmosphere. The CIRES Outreach program engages scientists in projects which include professional development opportunities for prospective and practicing teachers, district systemic reform work, partnership with outdoor education centers, EPO components associated with CIRES research, research mentors for students and more. Selected CIRES projects will be described, along with CIRES Outreach sociology research results on recruiting and retaining scientists in outreach activities.
