A local application to produce radar rainfall accumulation estimates for multiple Z-R relationships
Paul Jendrowski, NOAA/NWS, Honolulu, HI
The pps_dhr program executes the Precipitation Rate, Accumulation and Products WSR-88D algorithms to produce alternate versions of the One Hour Precipitation (OHP), Three Hour Precipitation (THP) and Storm Total Precipitation (STP) WSR-88D radar graphical products. The program can be run on AWIPS to produce one or more alternate versions of these products with different Z-R relationships or any other changes in the algorithm adaptation data. Data produced by pps_dhr is the WSR-88D standard format for graphic products and therefore can be directly displayed on AWIPS. There are several advantages to running pps_dhr: the baseline settings of the WSR-88D do not have to be altered, two or more Z-R relationships can be compared directly in real time, and there is no need to change operational Z-R during a precipitation event to try to correct rainfall estimates. This paper will describe the pps_dhr software, how it is integrated into AWIPS and present a case study.
