Multicast data distribution on the AWIPS local area network
Michael R. Biere, NOAA/ERL/FSL (in collaboration with) CIRA/Colorado State Univ., Boulder, CO; and D. L. Davis
In the current AWIPS site architecture, meteorological data is stored centrally on a set of data servers, and delivered to individual workstations on demand, as the visualization software requests it. FSL is investigating augmenting this network "pull" approach with a local site multicast "push" of data to the workstations as the data is received at the site. We expect this to reduce latencies in displaying data on the workstations, and increase overall site data availability. There are a number of open design issues, including the optimal subset of site data to broadcast, the data notification mechanisms, and whether to multicast transmission-format or decoded data formats.
