Finding factors for fatal flash floods in Missouri

A survey of flash floods that resulted in deaths in Missouri since 1990 has been undertaken. This paper presents findings from that survey. The authors show the combination of meteorological and hydrological conditions that result in floods on particular watersheds. The hydrometeorological situations responsible for severe floods are illustrated by the analysis of case studies. These show the synoptic and local atmospheric conditions alongside underlying watershed characteristics and catchment conditions prior to the flood. This type of information is important for those responsible for preparing flood warnings and responses for the more efficient direction or resources to those areas most at risk.
