The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has made significant progress in its ability to archive and provide access to its data holdings, and will continue to leverage on these advancing technologies. Management of these data can be accomplished only through a rapid expansion in storage capacity, increased communications bandwidth, and automation of the means of data ingest, quality control, and access. NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS) will act as the connection in NOAA's effort to meet these challenges and pave the way to accommodate an anticipated 15-fold increase in environmental data holdings, largely from increases in satellite data, over the next 10 years. Beginning in late 2003, NOAA will begin to offer some level-2 satellite products in a geospatially-enabled format via CLASS. This geospatially-enabled data will be able to be ingested as standard data layers by Geographic Information Systems and be displayed via open architecture web mapping servers, and will include the standard Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) formatted metadata required for federal geospatial data.
