The Federal Committee for Integrated Observing Systems (CIOS): Its Purpose and Objectives
This paper will describe the mission, objectives, roles and responsibilities of the Committee of Integrated Observing Systems (CIOS). CIOS is a federal committee charged with coordinating present and future activities for providing atmospheric and environmental observations across a diverse range of users and system operators. CIOS is one of several standing committees within the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology (OFCM). In the coming years, CIOS is poised to address issues that may arise regarding our Nation's needs for integrated observing systems. CIOS' mission is to work closely with the public and private sector to address overarching policy, scientific, and technical issues. CIOS' approach will be to interact, assist, and advise organizations that own, operate, and maintain observing systems as well those agencies and individuals who use and require access to what will become a national, information asset.
