In the recently released National Science Foundation (NSF) report, "Revolutionizing Science and Engineering through Cyberinfrastructure", a comprehensive and broad investment agenda is outlined to catalyze a revolution in what some are calling e-science. The report summarizes several major components of a Cyberinfrastructure Initiative (CI). These are: Discipline-changing cyberinfrastructure-based projects, Shared middleware and applications; Shared physical resources; Computing research; and Workforce and Education. This report is likely to shape future NSF investment strategies in information technology just as a series of predecessor reports influenced major undertakings such as Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (PACI). There are notable similarities between the major activities proposed by Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) and the CI. DLESE has seized simultaneous opportunities in information technology and geosciences education to foster a revolution in e-education. Discussed are future opportunities and challenges for DLESE within the CI framework.
