AWIPS Hardware Maintenance
AWIPS consists of over 15,000 pieces of hardware from over 30 vendors. This is a maintenance challenge. In the past, all hardware maintenance has been handled through the NCF. If a hardware problem was diagnosed, the NCF would dispatch the hardware maintenance provider -Hewlett-Packard. HP would go to the site and replace the suspect hardware part. With the addition of Linux machines to the AWIPS architecture, the model for hardware maintenance has changed. The Linux platforms are PC-based systems and the hardware maintenance will be handled through the National Logistics Support Center in Kansas City. This paper will describe the AWIPS hardware maintenance model including those processes that will continue to involve the NCF and those that will involve the NLSC. In addition, the paper will present some metrics on hardware failure and restoration.
