NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) is supporting marine GIS through the development of software tools, programs and websites that provide access to oceanographic data to the GIS user both on the desktop and the Internet. PMEL currently hosts a number of internet map servers (IMS) that track moving objects in near-real time. These services leverage multiple technologies including: ESRI’s ArcIMS software, JAVA, mySQL, JSP and HTML. This paper explains the architecture, technology and toolkits currently under development by PMEL, the National Marine Mammal Laboratory and NOAA’s Office of Marine and Aviation Operations. Additionally, two motion-tracking map server systems are highlighted. ShipTracker, provides near-real time mapping of ship locations and observational data. BelugaTracker, plots the location and activity of beluga whales in Cook Inlet,Alaska for the purpose of helping scientists visualize the whales’ foraging behavior in the Inlet.
