Rain and vapor samples were collected in and around Tropical Storm Gabrielle and Hurricane Opal during the active 1995 Atlantic Tropical Storm Season. Anomalously low isotope ratios, typically encountered only in tropical cyclones were recorded at the surface in the outflow regions of these storms, indicating that substantial amounts of vapor are exported from some hurricanes to the surroundings at low levels. The findings are confirmed by 3-dimensional trajectory analyses of the wind field in the vicinity of the storms.
