P7B.19
ON THE INTENSITY CHANGE OF TYPHOON FLO (1990)

Chun-Chieh Wu, National Taiwan University, Taipei, ; and H. J. Cheng and W. P. Huang

The EC/TOGA Advanced anlysis was used to study the environmental influences on the intensity of Typhoons Flo (1990) and Gene (1990). The result is also compared with numercial simulation using MM5. In particular, three factors affecting the intensity change of both typhoons were examined, including 1) the outflow structure; 2) eddy momonetum flux convergence; and 3) mean vertical wind shear.
The evolution of the potential vorticity in the outfow region was also investigated to understand the interaction between the upper environmental features and the typhoons. Comparison of differences between the two cases was also made to further elucidate the key factors affecting the intensity change of each typhoon. More detailed results will be shown in the conference
