AN EVOLUTION OF THE NUMERICAL STUDY OF THE TROPICAL CYCLONE ERRATIC MOTION

Lianshou Chen, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing, China

Tropical cyclone motion with sudden turning of direction, meandering or looping etc. are referred to as the erratic motion. A series of numerical simulation are implemented with the intensive data sets from SPECTRUM and TCM field experiments to study the physical mechanism of tropical cyclone erratic motion. Some findings are presented and described in the paper.

Tropical cyclone inner asymmetric structure is one of the prominent effects to storm's erratic motion if the environmental steering is weak. The study still indicate that the erratic motion could also arise from the interaction between the different motion scale systems and the topography effect in off-shore region.

Some numerical models could be of promise in predicting the erratic motion if the model is to be improved with bogus techniques and employ the satellite digital data to improve the initial field.
