THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TYPHOON RAINFALLS OVER TAIWAN AREA

T.C Yeh, Central Weather Bureau, Taipei, Taiwan; and S. C. Wu

The torrential rainfall associated with typhoons often caused severe damages over Taiwan area. Very little skill was known for the typhoon rainfall forecast. Some of the difficulties maybe due to the existence of the steep mountains over the central of the island. A 20 years data set from 25 surface stations over Taiwan area is used to study the characteristics of the typhoon rainfall. The empirical orthogonal function analysis is employed to identify the primary rainfall distributions. We will present the structure and the occurrence of some terrain-influenced modes. Evaluations of typhoon rainfall prediction based on a statistics and analog approach will also be reported
