HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1998 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON- YEAR OF LANDFALLS

Lixion A. Avila, NOAA/NHC/TPC, Miami, FL

The National Hurricane Center does not produce seasonal forecasts. However, historically, one should expect during a normal hurricane season 10 tropical storms, of which, six become hurricanes. In general, two of these systems hit the United States. The presentation will be devoted to summarize and to highlight the most important events of the 1998 hurricane season. The 1998 and 1997 seasons will be compared because there was a net deficit of tropical cyclone activity during 1997 in the Atlantic basin. The low number of tropical cyclones in 1997 was attributed to the large scale unfavorable environment over the tropical Atlantic partially caused by El Nino event
