REPORT OF THE FIRST STUDY CONFERENCE ON AVIATION WEATHER HAZARDS

Kelvin K. Droegemeier, CAPS/University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and D. Braaten and D. Rodenhuis

This presentation will summarize the outcome of the First Study
Conference on Aviation Weather Hazards held on the campus of the University of Kansas from 4-6 October, 1998. This Conference brought together experts from academia, industry, and state and federal civil service to address the fifth science objective of the National Weather Service: "locally hazardous weather that affects aviation." In particular, emphasis was placed on identifying important unsolved issues in basic meteorological research that impact aviation, along with mechanisms for the rapid prototyping and delivery of research results to operational users.

The Conference was organized jointly by the University of Kansas, the University of Oklahoma Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms, and the Aviation Weather Center of the NCEP/National Weather Service. Sponsors include the FAA, the US Weather Research Program, and the National Science Foundation's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).
