Preliminary objective analyses using the NESDIS/CIRA tropical cyclone infrared imagery PART I: HURRICANE HARMONICS

James P. Kossin, CIRA/Colorado State Univ., Fort Collins, CO

The NESDIS/CIRA tropical cyclone infrared imagery archive provides a rich data set for performing quantitative analyses, both spatial and temporal, of convective patterns in tropical cyclones and their near environment. Work is currently under way to exploit this data set with the goal of increasing understanding of inner and outer core dynamics, particularly as it pertains to current intensity and intensity change. The evolution of deep convection, and objectively measured deviations from axisymmetry, will be shown. The temporal behavior of the measured brightness temperatures consists of oscillations of varying frequencies. Spectral power and significance of these oscillations are found to depend on radial distance from the tropical cyclone center, with the diurnal cycle dominating at larger radii, and higher frequency oscillations dominating near the center.
