The improved forecasting and communication of weather hazards such as urban floods and localized extreme wind remains a complex global challenge. This has recently been recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as a priority for international weather research, through the establishment of the “HIWeather” project. In this presentation, we will summarize some key advances and challenges in the areas of Observations and Nowcasting; Multi-Scale Data Assimilation; and Multi-Scale Modeling and Probabilistic Forecasting. Some ideas for future research directions and international collaborations will be proposed.
