The Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) is part of NOAA’s Unified Forecast System (UFS); the goal of NGGPS is to advance the Nation’s environmental prediction capability for near-term weather and seasonal needs. To further develop NGGPS’s capabilities, the NWS is engaging with the research communities such as NOAA labs, academia, and NASA to develop and transition numerical weather prediction innovation into operations. The initial NGGPS capability was to integrate the GFDL FV3 dynamic core into the NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) and transition FV3 into operation as part of the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS).

Adopting comprehensive procedures and developing proper collaborative tools is vital to building a successful community. This presentation will focus on the procedures and collaborative tools developed to facilitate the collaboration with the research community and the transitioning of the FV3 dynamic core into the NCEP operations in accordance with the EMC and NGGPS implementation plans.
