Based on the 1971-2014 period best track data, the decadal variation of tropical cyclone (TC) in the South China Sea (SCS) in late season (October and November, ON) has been investigated. The results show that there is a significant decadal variation of TC genesis in SCS in ON. The period of 1971-1982 and the period of 2002-2014 are the two in-active TC periods. But there are different reasons for the reduced TC genesis in the two periods. For the first in-active TC period, the Pacific Decadal oscillation may be responsible, while the reduced TC genesis in SCS in the second period is much more associated with the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation.
