Valerie Were, NOAA Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies, New York, NY

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supports four Cooperative Science Centers as part of its Education Partnership Program with Minority-Serving Institutions. Among them is the Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies, a consortium of six institutions led by City College of the City University of New York. The Centers’ primary functions are to conduct research and to educate and train a diverse group of students and early career scientists in NOAA-related sciences with the goal of creating a diverse STEM workforce for NOAA and beyond. In the 2016 award, the Center was instructed to prioritize social science integration into its activities. This talk will present the lessons learned from the process of figuring out how to implement that mandate.
