NOAA is currently developing a Unified Forecast System (UFS) which utilizes the Finite Volume Cubed-Sphere (FV3) dynamical core and the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP). The CCPP has been developed by the Global Model Test Bed (GMTB) of the Developmental Testbed Center to facilitate the development of physics and to accelerate the transfer of innovations from the research community to operations. The CCPP contains both operational and developmental physics targeted for future operational implementations at a variety of scales. In addition, the CCPP can be used with the GMTB Single-Column Model (SCM) for idealized experiments.

This presentation describes the implementation of the CCPP in the GMTB SCM and in three developmental applications of the UFS: the SAR (FV3-Standard Alone Regional), the GFS (Global Forecast System), and the S2S (Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction). Selected cases will be shown, describing the behavior of the physics across scales.
