New research results and improved space weather models and observations over the last 20 years have produced significant advances in our ability to forecast conditions in the space environment, but many challenges remain. A great number of factors complicate space weather predictions, and many of these challenges are difficult to incorporate into modeling technology. This presentation will focus on some of the challenges space weather forecasters must face during a space weather outbreak. I will present details on past events that best illustrate the challenges and complexities of space weather forecasting.
