Development of the Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) - Current progress and future directions
An algorithm to estimate tropical cyclone intensity using geostationary infrared
satellite data has been developed. The algorithm, the Objective Dvorak Technique
(ODT), implements many of the rules and analysis criteria found in the subjective
Dvorak Analysis but performs this objectively, eliminating much of the
subjectivity inherent to the methodology. The ODT is currently being utilized
in operational and experimental modes at various tropical cyclone forecasting
centers worldwide, such as the NOAA/NESDIS/Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB), the
Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and the NOAA/Tropical Prediction Center. Past
user feedback has resulted in many important ODT functionality improvements.
Additional modifications are currently being implemented based upon analysis of
the ODT performance during operational use on numerous tropical cyclones worldwide.
The development of an Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) will continue to improve upon the current methodology, but will implement many new and experimental analysis routines using additional satellite data sets currently available. Expansion of the current technique to analysis storms of tropical storm strength and less is being explored and implemented. In addition, utilization of many new polar-orbiting satellite sensors, such as AMSU and SSM/I microwave imagery, and analysis routines using these data sets will be incorporated into the AODT to augment and enhance the accuracy of the current methods in estimating tropical cyclone intensity.
