The National Hurricane Center HURDAT Best Track Database indicates the Chesapeake-Potomac hurricane of 1933 affected Virginia and North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. However a discrepancy exists between the final storm intensity and the tabular data in the HURDAT file for this storm. The tabular data suggests a landfall intensity of 70 KT on the North Carolina coast and weakening to a strong tropical storm of 60 KT with a central pressure of 971 millibars upon crossing into southeast Virginia.

The preliminary re-analysis of the best track data for the Chesapeake-Potomac hurricane is based on various wind-pressure relationships and will be supplemented with surface observations and tidal surge data to further refine the storm intensity in North Carolina and Virginia.
