Neural networks (NNs) are a relatively new research tool in meteorology and oceanography. In forecasting hurricane intensity where highly non-linear and complex interactions exist, the NNs are showing promise as an alternative to previous statistical models and computer model simulations. By incorporating similar parameters utilized by the Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) comparisons are made.
