A classification scheme is presented of precipitation patterns in the passive microwave imagery from overpasses of tropical cyclones, in nature similar to Dvorak cloud pattern techniques, for estimating intensity. This set of patterns is most well-defined in the lower intensity range and complements the Dvorak technique, which sometimes gets behind in the T-number T3.0-T6.0 range. The classification is provided for Atlantic basin TC generated for easterly waves, in both sheared and low-shear environments, with most patterns relating to the principal band (Willoughby et al 1984). Some initial work will also be presented on EPAC and WPAC classification (including monsoonal development). In addition, changing orientation of the principal band in relation to intensification is examined.
