The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) has recently developed a new global 6.5-km version of the System for High-resolution prediction on Earth-to-Local Domains (SHiELD C1536). This new SHiELD flagship configuration is designed to advance weather prediction towards the global storm-resolving modeling resolutions. Compared to the 13-km configuration, the 6.5-km global SHiELD shows improvements on the forecasts of temperature, wind, cloud, and precipitation globally. In this talk, we will present the 10-day tropical cyclone forecast skill in this new SHiELD configuration by demonstrating its general track and intensity forecasts in the 2021 and 2022 hurricane seasons, and by in-depth individual case studies of Hurricanes Ida (2021) and Ian (2022).
