Jetstream—The National Weather service Southern Region Weather School
Michael D. Vescio, NOAA/NWS, Pendleton, OR; and S. Cooper and D. Cain
Jetstream is a web based learning system developed by the Southern Region of the National Weather Service to increase the knowledge of its users on a wide variety of weather topics. Its original intent was to provide curricula to middle school teachers in web format, but since its release in the spring of 2003, Jetstream has captured a much wider audience, including those from the emergency management community and the media. Each section or "module" is designed with both text and graphical displays and includes learning lessons. These lessons are essentially lab experiments that can be conducted in the classroom. Review questions are also included at the end of each module. The modules are designed to be completed either individually or sequentially to allow for maximum flexibility. Also provided in Jetstream is a tutorial entitled "Weather on the Web" which contains step-by-step instructions on how to retrieve weather information from the internet. A future expansion of Jetstream is planned to include material suitable for grade school and high school students. Jetstream can be viewed at http://www.srh.weather.gov/jetstream/.
