Spreading the Word about Climate Change

David D. Houghton, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

Motivated by the urgent need to improve public scientific understanding for climate change discussions, a personal outreach program was initiated by the author two years ago. The activity developed following retirement from formal classroom teaching and completion of a WMO text book on climate change. Presentations have been given to a wide variety of adult and student groups: church, environmental, civic, university, and scientific (including three talks in China). These presentations included extensive question and discussion time which provided for audience interaction. The report summarizes the background, scope, strategy, content , and accomplishments of this outreach work. It is hoped that such information will encourage other scientists to increase outreach work to the public.
