TEACHING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENTS WEATHER USING REMOTE SENSING TO INTERPRET FLOOD DATA

Shobha Sriharan, Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA

Virginia State University (VSU) is an 1890 Land-Grant Institution with focus on agricultural and environmental science education by integrating technology in instruction. To prepare qualified African-American students with hands-on experiences to interpret weather forecasts, the author conducted a collaborative student project with NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), Wakefield, Virginia. The results of this project enabled the student to collect flood data and interpret the impact of Hurricanes Floyd and Fran on food production, under the supervision of Mr. Keith Lynch, Hydrologist, and NOAA-NWS. VSU will offer the course. “Introduction to Weather” as an Elective in Spring and Fall, 2004 and expose students to hands-on experiences at NWS.
