The University of Missouri-Columbia Online Cloud Atlas
Hall 4AB
An online cloud atlas has been developed in the Atmospheric Science program at the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC). Unlike most cloud image collections on the World Wide Web, our atlas strives to provide additional information beyond a photo and the cloud formation’s Latin name. In the tradition of the International Cloud Atlas, each photo is annotated and features an accompanying description of the image. Additionally, a brief synoptic discussion is provided along with the nearest surface observation and analyses of the surface, 850, 700, 500, and 300 mb levels. The addition of satellite imagery will be made in time for the symposium. With each cloud specimen, the primary Web page features the required image and description, and links to the more advanced analyses. This approach makes the UMC Online Cloud Atlas suitable for use by students from grade school to the college level.
