Global variable resolution Euler model development and application
Room 4AB
A global variable resolution Euler model has been developed and tested in a series of real-data experiments. This model is similar to other Euler models, but is able to telescope into regions of particular interest through a mathematical rotation of the geographical pole to such areas. The convergence of meridians toward the poles of a spherical coordinate system automatically provides enhanced longitude resolution in the vicinity of model poles, and closer spacing of the latitude mesh around a pole then produces higher local resolution in both horizontal dimensions. Model physical parameterizations are similar to those that that are also implemented in our global primitive equation model, and comparisons of forecasts produced by the Euler and PE models can be used to isolate effects of changing from an Euler to a Primitive Equation dynamical core. A series of 14 day forecasts has been produced by both the Euler and PE model, and evaluated in terms of their bias errors and bias-corrected anomaly correlations. These forecasts display similar skill for day-to-day weather prediction by the two models, but are characterized by different bias errors.
