The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory has created Internet Map Servers in support of fisheries-oceanography data access as well as projects that map tsunami inundation in coastal areas. Map Servers work well to display and query data as well as making map layers available to the general public. More sophisticated users have requested more functionality in the Map Server applications, including the ability to perform calculations between layers of data that are served in the framework of the Internet Map Server. These tools would allow the user to select layers, define equations for calculations and send the request to a back end server for computation. Through back end Java programming and Java Scripting, PMEL was able to enhance functionality including more sophisticated geoprocessing features that are not available in out of the box ArcIMS deployments. This paper will demonstrate the results of two examples of the WebMap Calculator back end, the first with tsunami inundation run up models for the city of Seattle and another using Bering Sea fisheries-oceanography data.
The Web Map Calculator project assists modelers, scientists and emergency managers with modeling scenarios that are critical to rapid response in emergency situations.
