An Aviation Weather Decision Support System (AWDSS) has been developed for the Dubai International Airport. This system provides the assimilation, quality control, and integration of many different meteorological datasets and commands the execution of many aviation-relevant algorithms. These datasets include radar data from a C-Band radar, vertical profiles of temperature and humidity and liquid water from a Radiometrics radiometer, vertical profiles of wind from a DeGreane wind profiler, surface observations, and satellite data. Several different algorithms have been licensed and integrated into the system including the Machine Intelligent Gust Front Algorithm (MIGFA) and the Advanced Microburst Detection Algorithm (AMDA) from MIT/Lincoln Laboratories, the Storm Cell Identification and Tracking algorithm (SCIT) from the National Severe Storms Laboratory, and the MAPLE algorithm from McGill University. Several other proprietary algorithms have also been integrated into the system including algorithms to detect and nowcast the presence of atmospheric turbulence, fog, low-level wind shear, and vertical temperature inversions. An algorithm to measure and nowcast flight-level winds is also included. A custom version of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) modeling system has been implemented as well. Two different display technologies have also been developed and customized for meteorologists and air traffic controllers to display the data and algorithm output.
