Numerous methods have been proposed for providing verification methods in the face of gridded verification sets to better characterize forecast performance. So far, most of these methods have been concerned with a single instance of a forecast. However, it is also of interest to incorporate the temporal dimension. For example, timing errors will appear as spatial displacements: it cannot be readily determined if it is a timing error or an actual spatial displacement error. Here, one of these methods, known as image warping, is extended to incorporate the temporal dimension. Initial results suggest that such a technique is both feasible and potential useful in discerning temporal from spatial errors.
